I am a German who lived in Poland for half a year as a student - and later I lived right on the border for five years - and I would never have noticed the commonalities with German food - but almost a third of the "exotic" foods mentioned in the article are things common here, too. As neighboring countries, that of course makes a certain sense, but I am amazed that they would be noteworthy for British readers!

For a long time it was difficult to get pierogi in Germany, but nowadays you can get them in almost every "regular" supermarket. We just have to make sure my favorite - pierogi ruskie - are indeed vegetarian - many of them come with lard.
