Iraqi-Jew raised in Montreal, Canada. I well remember the otherness of eating amba even amongst other Jewish neighbors. It bemuses me to see its newfound popularity. I even saw a tub of ‘amba’ in Trader Joe’s. What could that be? And how did the source of my childhood embrassement get whitewashed to this point.

Also ship brand was the brand I grew up with and is the only one I recognize!

Thank you for this amazing article! I had not heard of amba before, but its history and different variations are fascinating.

I have enjoyed amba for almost 50 years now in salads, sandwiches and with meals in general. Ship brand is the way to go but beware of imitations as the bottle says.
